The Kingdom of the Netherlands was today elected to the Human Rights Council for the 2015-2017 period by the UN General Assembly. Foreign minister Bert Koenders welcomes the Netherlands’ membership of the council. ‘What happened today underlines the importance the Netherlands places on human rights worldwide,’ said the minister.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Frans Timmermans, has requested His Majesty the King to discharge him from his duties as Minister of Foreign Affairs as of today, 17 October 2014.
King Willem-Alexander has appointed Bert Koenders as Minister of Foreign Affairs. Mr Koenders was sworn in by the King at Noordeinde Palace on Friday 17 October 2014.

European Commission President-Elect Jean-Claude Juncker has announced his new team of Commissioners for the next five years. Foreign minister Frans Timmermans will be Mr Juncker’s First Vice President and right-hand man. If confirmed by the European Parliament, the minister will be entrusted with the portfolio on better regulation, inter-institutional relations, rule of law and the Charter of Fundamental Rights. Prime Minister Mark Rutte has said that he is ‘very happy’ with the important job Mr Timmermans has been offered.
